With each pattern and stitch paying homage to the clans that have protected them so closely, the Aran sweater remains one of the most fascinating sweaters in existence. Our carefully selected designs have their roots in Celtic art and each has a distinct meaning. Unlike cheaper Aran sweaters, ours feature their distinct designs on the front and back.

The cables, for example, represent a fisherman’s rope and represent the wish for a fruitful day at the mercy of the unforgiving ocean. The intricate garter stitch, created by alternating knit and purl stitches, represents the seaweed that was used to fertilize barren fields in the hope of a good harvest.

The 100% wool composition means you get all the thermal and hydrophobic benefits required by the original Irish inventors of the wind-ravaged Aran Islands.

The History of the Aran Jumper

The Aran Islands are nestled off the west coast of Ireland, at the mercy of the Atlantic Sea. Traditionally worn by the fishermen and farmers who populated the islands, the Aran Jumper proudly displayed the symbols of Irish clan heritage. To the discerning eye, the intricate patterns and stitches of Aran knitwear provide a wealth of information. Historically, these patterns were jealously guarded by the clan over the generations and, much like Guernsey jumpers, were used to identify the bodies of fishermen, whose lives were sadly lost at sea.
